In November 1991, Ken Onion began his knifemaking journey under the mentorship of renowned craftsman Stan Fujisaka. After just one session, Ken was hooked—he immediately ordered a Burr King grinder and never looked back. His fascination with high-speed, precision machinery stems from his background as a jet mechanic in the Marine Corps and later as a robotics technician, both of which sharpened his technical expertise.
Gifted with a natural talent for design, Ken combined creativity and engineering to develop the groundbreaking SpeedSafe® assisted-opening mechanism in 1997. In 1996, he created the first commercially successful assisted-opening knife, and two decades later, he introduced his award-winning Field Strip Technology.
Recognized as one of the most innovative knife designers in the industry, Ken became the youngest-ever inductee into the Blade Magazine Hall of Fame in 2008. He is also the visionary behind the acclaimed Eros™ folder series and the award-winning Hi Jinx™—a testament to his relentless drive for innovation.
