Bob Lum was a legend in the knife world. In the late 1970s, he took the traditional tantō shape, including its distinctive kissaki point, and reimagined it in a Western-style fixed blade. The result was the American tanto, a design that remains a standard in modern knife making. If you know the word tantō, it’s because of this maker.

Lum wasn’t just a designer; he was a student of the blade. Influenced by Japanese swords and Chinese martial arts, his knives were all about balance, intent, and history. Every line had a purpose; every curve was considered. He never followed trends, he set them. He collaborated with Spyderco on icons like the Chinese Folder and Lum Tanto, proving custom-level craftsmanship could reach a wider audience.

This piece is possibly 30 to 35 years old and has been tucked away in our vault. It was carried by Bob Lum himself while working with knifemaker Terry Davis in Eastern Oregon. The walk and talk is excellent, and the character marks only add to the story. You only get one chance at this one.
